The 2021 Michigan Wolverines football team finished 12-2 overall and 8-1 in Big Ten play, winning the East Division and capturing the program’s first Big Ten championship since 2004 (43rd overall). The Wolverines finished ranked No. 3 in the final AP and Coaches polls. They scored 501 points (35.8 per game) while allowing 243 (17.4 per game). Under seventh-year head coach Jim Harbaugh, Michigan achieved its first College Football Playoff appearance and third 12-win season in program history.

Regular Season: From Unranked to Contenders

Michigan opened the year unranked after a 2-4 campaign in 2020 and started with four consecutive wins: 47-14 over Western Michigan, 31-10 against Washington, 63-10 over Northern Illinois, and 20-13 against Rutgers.

Road victories at Wisconsin (38-17) and Nebraska (32-29) improved the record to 6-0. A 33-7 home win over Northwestern preceded a 33-37 road loss at No. 8 Michigan State—the team’s only regular-season defeat. Michigan responded with a 29-7 home win over Indiana, a 21-17 road victory at No. 23 Penn State, and a 59-18 rout at Maryland.

On November 27 at Michigan Stadium, the Wolverines defeated No. 2 Ohio State 42-27 in front of 111,156 fans. It was Michigan’s first victory over the Buckeyes since 2011, the highest point total against Ohio State since 1946, and clinched the East Division title along with a berth in the Big Ten Championship Game.

Postseason: Conference Title and Playoff Debut

In the Big Ten Championship Game on December 4 in Indianapolis, Michigan defeated No. 15 Iowa 42-3. Hassan Haskins set a single-season school record with his 20th rushing touchdown, and Aidan Hutchinson earned MVP honors as the defense limited Iowa to 279 total yards. The victory marked Michigan’s first conference title under Harbaugh.

As the No. 2 seed in the College Football Playoff, Michigan faced No. 3 Georgia in the Orange Bowl semifinal on December 31 in Miami Gardens, Florida. The Wolverines fell 11-34, ending the season at 12-2.

Statistical and Contextual Notes

Hassan Haskins rushed for 1,327 yards and a school-record 20 touchdowns. Blake Corum added 952 rushing yards. Cade McNamara threw for 2,576 yards and 15 touchdowns, with freshman J.J. McCarthy contributing in relief. Aidan Hutchinson led a stout defense that ranked among the nation’s best, earning Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year honors. Jake Moody provided reliable special teams production.

Michigan went 7-0 at home and finished with the highest AP ranking since the 1997 national championship team. The season featured a physical, run-heavy identity and marked a clear turning point after years of inconsistency against top competition.

In the broader historical context, the 2021 campaign represented the long-awaited breakthrough of the Harbaugh era. It delivered the first Big Ten title in 17 years, the program’s first College Football Playoff berth, and a signature victory over Ohio State that shifted the trajectory of the rivalry. The year laid the foundation for the sustained success that followed in 2022 and 2023.
