Is Roddy Gayle Jr. Returning to Michigan?
Roddy Gayle just may be returning to Michigan. On Friday, Judge Charlotte Sweeney of the U.S. District Court of Colorado granted a preliminary junction that requires the NCAA to grant another year of eligibility to athletes in the 2022 class. This landmark case stemmed from the NCAA granting 5 years of eligibility to all future athletes, causing former athletes to sue for the same benefits granted to current athletes. For players concerning Michigan, Roddy Gayle Jr. is at the top of the list

Roddy Gayle Jr. just may be returning to Michigan.
For players concerning Michigan, Roddy Gayle Jr. is at the top of the list.
Gayle would be eligible under this ruling, as he played the last two years at Michigan and his first two at Ohio State. Although there has been no official announcement by Gayle or any of his representatives, one would have to imagine he would want to return to play college basketball. The former Wolverine went undrafted in the 2026 NBA draft but was signed on an Exhibit 10 contract with the Detroit Pistons for the NBA Summer League and training camp.
The biggest hurdle for Gayle would be the fact that he is already under contract with the NBA, with an Exhibit 10 being able to be converted to a 2-way or G-League rights for a player. Although NCAA law states that a player cannot return to college if they have left and signed a pro contract, recent rulings may challenge this. If there isn’t already a basis to form a request to Michigan or the NCAA, Gayle may also be able to form his own lawsuit.
For the Wolverine’s team side of things, Michigan Head Coach Mike Boynton Jr. said a few weeks ago that “we would like to, in a perfect world, add another veteran piece if we could.” There is perhaps no better candidate than Roddy Gayle himself, who Boynton already has a relationship with.
Although Gayle had a modest campaign in Michigan's’ National Championship run, averaging 7.3 points and 3.3 rebounds per game, he’s a piece of the roster that is irreplaceable. You may be able to bring in star talent or a piece with more name recognition, but nothing can replace the heart and soul of a team.
Many Wolverine fans will recall quite well the hate Roddy Gayle received during his first season at Michigan. I covered it while I was at GBM Wolverine and my attitude towards Gayle never changed. He may be a former Buckeye, and he may have his ups and downs, but Boynton and his staff should be willing to try nearly anything and everything to get his former player back on this roster.
I believe that Roddy Gayle is headed back to Ann Arbor.
